Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment
Summary
Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Implementation
This program funds implementation of the SBIRT public health model in real-world primary care and community health settings to address substance use screening and early intervention. The focus is on detecting underage drinking, opioid use, and other substance use disorders in children, adolescents, and adults through systematic screening, delivering brief counseling or motivational interventions, and connecting patients to treatment when needed. Research teams will work across diverse care delivery systems—federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), hospital networks, health plans, pediatric practices, children's hospitals, and school-based settings—to implement and evaluate SBIRT protocols. The program seeks evidence on implementation effectiveness, fidelity, sustainability, and health outcomes in these varied contexts, spanning implementation science, public health, and clinical substance use disorder prevention and treatment.
